I still remember when online shopping felt like a mini marathon, i.e., find a product, jump to another page, fill out forms, check shipping, then re-enter card details. Somewhere in that maze, many of us dropped off. 🤯 

That friction has long been the silent killer of conversion. And now, something big is changing. With OpenAI launching Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT, we’re seeing the start of what many are calling a world where discovery, conversation, and transaction happen in one seamless flow. 

This isn’t just another feature drop. It’s a signal that the way customers discover and buy products is about to be rewritten. And every brand, retailer, and merchant should be paying attention.


What Exactly Is “Chat & Commerce”?

In simple terms, chat and commerce is when an AI agent not only helps you find products but also buys them for you (securely, contextually, and instantly). 

OpenAI’s Instant Checkout does just that. You can ask ChatGPT, “Find me a handmade coffee mug under $40, and buy it directly in the chat window — no browser tabs, no carts, no checkout forms. 

For now, it’s limited to single-item purchases from U.S. Etsy and Shopify merchants, but the roadmap includes multi-item carts and global rollout.

For decades, discovery and checkout have been two separate experiences, i.e., the “find” and the “buy. 

But when both collapse into a single chat flow, every product interaction becomes a potential purchase moment.

  1. At launch, Instant Checkout supports only one item per purchase, limiting upsells and bundle deals. 

Honestly, the threat isn’t ChatGPT, it’s invisibility. Every platform eventually turns pay-to-play, whether it’s Google, Meta, TikTok, or AI. My Take: What’s Next!

I’ve been testing small-scale experiments myself. Like enriching product data, tweaking descriptions, and observing how AI search results shift. In the next year, I expect more “buy-in-chat” use cases across industries, from apparel and beauty to B2B procurement. The brands that integrate discovery, conversation, and checkout into one smooth journey will set the new benchmark for customer experience.
